At the end of a long day I cross the Columbia River at its mouth on the Astoria–Megler Bridge, to Astoria, Oregon. In 1966 the bridge completed US 101, and, at 6545 m (21,474 ft), is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. Lewis and Clark, whose steps I have been dodging, spent the winter of 1805–06 in a small log structure near here.
